The Old Dominion women’s basketball team landed the first member of its 2011 recruiting class, receiving an oral commitment from Ashley Betz-White on Saturday.
Betz-White, a 5-foot-3 point guard out of Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa. , averaged 11.4 points and 4.2 steals last year and was named to the Class AAA All-State third team as a junior. Betz- White also had offers from Temple, James Madison and Loyola.
“I liked the campus, just the environment; it’s beautiful,” Betz- White said. “I really liked the staff. As soon as I stepped on campus, I just got that feeling.”
A true point guard, Betz-White excels in transition and on the secondary break, but is also comfortable in a set offense. Her AAU coach, Karen Hicks, raved about her spin move.
“It seems like a really good fit for her,” said Hicks, who coaches the Mid-Penn Motion U 16 team. “I talked with them a lot. You could tell they were really interested. They really liked her style, her ability to get out and run, and they’re trying to build around that. She’s amazing in transition.”
A two-year starter in high school after serving as the first substitute off the bench as a freshman, Betz-White seems destined to earn important minutes from the start with the Monarchs.
Guards Jasmine Parker, Shadasia Green and Kquanise Byrd made 88 out of a possible 96 starts at guard for ODU last season
